Trademarks, Copyrights, and Theft, Oh My!
Ok, maybe the headline is stretching things just a bit, but ODU gets no points for creativity on their new logo and helmets as it seems we’ve seen that “mascot in the state outline” design somewhere before, maybe even fairly recently.

Then ODU just recently announced they’re making this their main athletic logo, including Center Court at the TED and on their helmets for football:

Look, we know ODU’s currently riding high, bigheaded fanbase is going to all go “wow, that looks amazing” the same way we did last year and never trouble themselves with any pesky sense of history or self-awareness. To be honest, we’re still quietly pissed that they have a national platform to promote this change (and a sweet “CUSA” on that court) and an administration that is capable of realizing how even details like solid branding opportunities can be important to a program. But seriously, don’t even try to explain it to them. It’s just a culture of ignorant bliss – like trying to explain to a Darius Rucker “fan” that Wagon Wheel is a cheap knockoff and should not be tolerated.
Of course, to continue with the analogy, that really makes us no better than the Old Crow Medicine Show in this story because the Bob Dylan originator in all of this is definitely ECU. But hey, we’d rather share writing credits with Dylan than release anything with the elevator-music dreck that is Lady Antebellum. And now this court design can hopefully run away with the Convo competition:

I’m worried about the basketball court design contest. About 30% of the designs submitted are sweet. Unfortunately, about 50% are the ugliest, horrible ideas I’ve ever seen in my life.

Love my Dukes but the Student Duke Club should be ashamed of their geography skills. At least ODU has the entire state on their logo and remebered to include the Eastern Shore

Does no one else see that with this court design, half of the Convo will see Duke Dog’s menacing eyes, and half the court will see the Pringles Man mustache?!
That court submission is one of my least favorites. Let’s show our class and pick a design with the JMU seal at mid-court.

In fairness to ODU, that top part of NOVA near DC perfectly resembles the lion’s crown.

Also that court design looks awful. It looks like the Nike swoosh meets the Pringles man.
I think people are submitting court ideas just for the sake of submitting an idea, rather than because they thought of something that would actually look good on the floor.
I’m begging the administration to ban all hipster-moustache designs (+1 to the pringles comment, above), virginia department of tourism designs (we know there are mountains nearby, thank you), and any JMU-academic-seal-designed-by-a-50-something-mother-of-3 designs (This is not Harvard).
Honestly, the court isn’t that bad as it is. The wood could be lightened up (its too yellow). The convo needs better lighting. More than anything, it needs fans in seats, and more banners in the rafters.
The administration won’t pick the seal for a court design. They didn’t spend money for someone to design a set of athletics logos to not make it the centerpiece of the aesthetics and design of the dept.

Every other design except for the one posted above is so unoriginal and boring. The point of the new design is to get something new that will get us attention.
