Men’s Hoops With a Sh*ttastic Performance Against Northeastern

[polldaddy poll=7719319]

Really getting tired of running this pic.

Really getting tired of running this pic.

Vote for as many options as you like. Besides that, there’s just not much more to say so we’ll run the shit-sandwich pic again, say that at least we know Northeastern is equally horrendous, say goodbye and good luck to Daren Stolztfus (what’s with all the Rocktown media members bailing at once?), and give you the following flow chart of how the Dukes can easily tell if they should shoot or not on any given possession:

Are you behind the three-point line? ? Yes ? DO NOT SHOOT (it’s hot lava!)

We’ll get to the newly released football schedule Friday, but we’re not nearly as up in arms about it as some, mainly because we’re old. But also because there are lots of good matchups and LOVE the Halloween Homecoming weekend!

I went out in my driveway last night and hit 15/20 from the FT line. I’m twice these guys’ age.

This game brought up all the problems I’ve had with JMU men’s basketball since I was a freshman. I should be more patient with so many young players, I should give Brady more slack the season after he coached us to a CAA championship, but how many times do we have to watch the Dukes come out and show nothing to start a “big game” at Convo? Every time there’s any semblance of a crowd, the team goes ice cold. I complained about it on Twitter already but I’m going to complain about it more right now.

52 lousy points!12-for-22 from the free throw line isn’t good, but I’m more concerned about the half court game. Last year’s team had a lot more talent and still struggled to score consistently. AJ Davis isn’t here anymore to carry you for 10 minutes while the rest of the team checks out. If you took Curry out of the game last night, JMU had 2 assists. 2! NU had 5 players with multiple assists, and that was on a bad night for them. JMU’s offense has no movement, just a couple passes and settling for low-percentage shot attempts. Don’t tell me this team’s plan is to win games behind the arc, they’re not. They just aren’t able to get better scoring opportunities right now, and that means we’re in for a bunch of losses in the 50s as CAA play rolls on.

I know I’m being negative, and the history of past JMU teams losing at home shouldn’t be held against the guys on this team, but I have deep doubts about Brady’s program sometimes. Last year’s team was by no means dominant. A lot of seniors, a lot of individual talent, but a 4th place regular season finish in the conference and it took a miracle to get past Delaware in the CAA semi-finals. I supported extending Brady because I’m impressed that he can recruit out-of-state talent like Davis, Moore, Goins, and now Nation and Cooke. But when I’m not being thrilled at the individual talent of a few JMU stars, I’m left wondering what the hell the team is doing as a whole. I don’t understand or enjoy the offense, and the team lacks preparedness for big games at both sides of the floor.

I get they are a young team, but the FT shooting is inexusable. If we shoot FTs decent 70% we win against UD and NE.

Our multi-national, grade-level varying ( freshmen & a grad student ) team was shooting bricks from every spot on the floor. It was very hard to watch.

With very few juniors & seniors, I’m wondering what happened with recruiting 3 or 4 years ago …

I totally agree with the other posts. My son’s 10-11 year old team can make a higher percentage of free throws than JMU. And if the three pointers aren’t falling for JMU it is up to the coach to say “stop it or you ride the bench.”

To me, these are definitely coaching issues of not emphasizing the importance of making free throws, and taking good shots during a game. They are also careless with the ball and turn it over to much.

I also agree with comments on recruiting. Remember we would have had a couple juniors, but they were run out of town. The bunch of tall guys that are part of this freshman class seem to be carbon copies of each other. There just isn’t enough variety on this team to make it well rounded. Definitely not enough shooting guards or ball handlers.
