Gameday Open Thread: Dukes vs. Ticks

Big game today folks. Big, big game. The Dukes face their old pals the Ticks. The game will be nationally broadcast on NBC Sports Network. Check your local listings or tune into the free stream here. The Dukes are riding a 5 game winning streak. RU is coming off a disappointing loss to Maine. A win would do a lot for both teams’ playoff chances. And then there’s that whole in-state rivalry thing. Like we said, it’s a big game. Consider this your open thread for all pre-game, in-game, and post-game chatter. Go Dukes! Beat Richmond!

i don’t feel bad about not selling out BFS anymore.

  2. TSDukes09 / Nov 15 2014

After JMU scored, our pro-Madison section started throwing streamers. One of the Richmond guest service attendants came to our section to remind us “this is not JMU. Streamers are not allowed”. Needless to say, she got booed.

  3. Drake / Nov 15 2014

Nice to see big time pressure and the cornerbacks doing a great job so far.

  4. 2004 Duke / Nov 15 2014

That was an excellent play by Reynolds on that forced fumble.

  5. Bhagavan / Nov 15 2014

Who in the HELL is the snapper? The guy has been doing that all game.

  6. maddukes98 / Nov 15 2014

Yeah it was bound to happen….

  7. 2004 Duke / Nov 15 2014

WHY DO MODERN COACHES INSIST ON LINING UP IN THE SHOTGUN INSIDE THE 5 YARD LINE?????????????

  8. Rob / Nov 15 2014

Taylor Reynolds came to play today. Need a stop here before the half.

  9. Bhagavan / Nov 15 2014

    These “targeting” penalties are bullshit.

  10. maddukes98 / Nov 15 2014

    That is nuts.

  11. maddukes98 / Nov 15 2014

    two gone???!!!

  12. 2004 Duke / Nov 15 2014

This “targeting” stuff is totally out of control. Neither of those were even CLOSE to targeting. The first one the guy was even moving BACKWARDS when he made the hit!

  13. maddukes98 / Nov 15 2014

Don’t have a prob with Peak ejection but marlowe didn’t hit him helmet and it WR made a move and ducked.

  14. Rob / Nov 15 2014

First call was bad (thought Peake was holding up). The second one (on Marlowe) might be the worst targeting call I’ve ever seen.

  15. Drake / Nov 15 2014

Looks like Rocco not only talked to the refs about keeping the up-tempo offensive in check, but the aggressive nature of our defense. I’m not sure how an offensive player can lower their heads all day, but defensive players get flagged for it.

  16. 2004 Duke / Nov 15 2014

This is where a mickey matthews meltdown and visor toss would be perfectly appropriate.

  17. Xerk / Nov 15 2014

Those hits are just football during the speed of the game. Total crap calls. That high snap and those calls have totally changed momentum.

  18. 92GRAD / Nov 15 2014

That call against Marlowe may be the worst in the history of the CAA. I cannot believe that was upheld on replay. These officials need to be sanctioned.

  19. Ken / Nov 15 2014

Doesn’t matter; both hit the receivers with the top of their helmets. I don’t like the calls either, but the rule isn’t new and it’s not like we didn’t have the benefit of review on these.

Hope the offense can control the ball and clock in the second half AND the defensive line can get home; I would expect UR to throw on 90% of its downs.

  20. maddukes98 / Nov 15 2014

Ken, it doesn’t appear that Marlowe hit the WR helmet. Peak I agree, but both calls weren’t good.

  21. Ken / Nov 15 2014

@maddukes98: I didn’t think so either, but it wasn’t so obviously below the head/neck area that it could be overturned. The NBCSN color commentator didn’t think the ejection should stand either.

  22. jmuparent / Nov 15 2014

Football is becoming a game of patsies. Now boys …. don’t play hard and don’t hit someone on the opposite team with too much force …

    I call B—S—-!

  23. maddukes98 / Nov 15 2014

No wonder Withers declined interviews, he knows he would say something to get him ejected!

  24. DCDuke / Nov 15 2014

I agreed with the call in Peak but not Marlowe, receiver was running with the ball. Just a football play. Keep it going in second half O!

  25. Rob / Nov 15 2014

Time to put it to rest and bust this one wide open in the second half. Here we go Dukes!

  26. 07Duke / Nov 15 2014

i’m so angry right now. I want our Dukes to pound these sweater vest wearing Poormond Ticks into the dirt. Go Dukes!!!!!!!

  27. Xerk / Nov 15 2014

    I f***ing HATE Richmond.

  28. Ken / Nov 15 2014

At least one guy is playing defense.

  29. maddukes98 / Nov 15 2014

Reynolds may not be able to be a cover corner but he can do everything else apparently today.

  30. maddukes98 / Nov 15 2014

how did we not get the ball there? Moreland had it?

  31. DCDuke / Nov 15 2014

    Taylor ‘effin Reynolds

  32. 2004 Duke / Nov 15 2014

Proud of Taylor Reynolds for finally living up to the hype…great game, kid!

  33. Drake / Nov 15 2014

I don’t remember a defensive player having this big of a game for JMU in a long time. Moats maybe sometime during his years but Reynolds is playing lights out. Should get a national defensive POW.

  34. maddukes98 / Nov 15 2014

That is a lock with that play.

  35. 2004 Duke / Nov 15 2014

We’ve come a long way since our zero pass attempt win over Bill&Gary.

  36. maddukes98 / Nov 15 2014

Again, 2nd half adjustments seem to be happening. Shows the difference having a coach from a big time FBS program makes. #WithersForSecretaryofDefense2016

  37. Rob / Nov 15 2014

Couldn’t be happier for Reynolds. He’s had his struggles and heard it from the fans, but he’s playing his best in the biggest game of his young career.

  38. Jmupsyc / Nov 15 2014

Love the ‘go dukes’ chant in bridgeforth east. Try to cheat us out of the game… That’s what you get. Go Dukes!

  39. maddukes98 / Nov 15 2014

    Nice hit.

  40. Bhagavan / Nov 15 2014

Reynolds was a high school quarterback who’s obviously a great athlete. It was bound to take some time to come around. Definitely an excellent performance.

  41. maddukes98 / Nov 15 2014

Yeah, I just went ahead and took the initiative to update the Wiki page on NCAA football records.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_football_records#Interceptions

    #TaylorEffinReynolds

  42. maddukes98 / Nov 15 2014

That would be most interceptions for TDs in a game – FCS (2) (tied, but most recent)

  43. Rob / Nov 15 2014

Well, that was fun. Go Dukes!

  44. 76 / Nov 15 2014

What happened to Cheatham, and when?
Next man up Kloosterman did well.

  45. Devon / Nov 15 2014

Awesome game. Got the “This is our house” chant going in the fourth quarter. Think we brought more fans than they did. Let’s go beat Elon and punch our ticket to the postseason boys!!!

  46. Deacon Danny / Nov 15 2014

What a great day to be a JMU fan in the cool but sunny confines of University of Richmond HS! Way to show up and play 4 quarters of football today! And the highest of props to Taylor Reynolds today, Great game!

    I love a tick dismantling!

  47. Ken / Nov 16 2014

Complete game!!! Just finished watching the 2nd half (left for a family wedding during halftime) and WOW! Another 2nd half shutout for the defense, 3 more turnovers forced and Vad is just the best player on the field.

The only thing missing from that beat down of the Ticks was rubbing alcohol and a match….

@Todd and @Rob — put the poll up, I’m ready to move to the “Yes” side. So impressed with what I saw today. It’s just icing on the cake that the Dukes hung ‘half a hunert’ on UR.

  48. Ken / Nov 16 2014

Great: Reynolds; half-time adjustments — again!; Reynolds; Vad; Reynolds

    Good: Kloosterman, Ravenel and Smith

Bad: Defensive back going high — especially when there is an established track record of targeting; Peake’s ejection warranted since the receiver was not even back on the ground when he got tattooed to the side of his head. Marlowe’s ejection was….

Ugly: receiver had moved 2-3 steps upfield, ducked his head and even though Marlowe hit him in the helmet, the receiver was not defenseless.

Still wondering how you incur a delay of game penalty when only 15 seconds elapsed off the clock? Does the play clock go to 25 seconds after a first down? If not, that was just bizarre….

  49. Ken / Nov 16 2014

Taylor Reynolds = FCS Nat’l Defensive Player of the Week. Rewound the DVR just to see his takeaways again!

  50. Deacon Danny / Nov 16 2014

Oh, and great game for the O-Liine also. I have not seen O-Line dominance like that from this team in years. Vad had all day back there.

Josh Wells could not have blocked like that last year without holding at least 3 times per play!

btw, I did not understand the roughing the snapper call on the one punt. How the heck do you rough someone up in the trenches?

  51. Todd / Nov 17 2014

Deacon – on that last point about the roughing the snapper, I think there may be a special rule to protect long snappers, who are extremely vulnerable, but maybe some of our more knowledgeable referee watchers can fill us in.

  52. Ken / Nov 18 2014

@Todd: the NCAA and NFL changed to rules about 5 years ago to keep long snappers from getting steamrolled at the snap:

    1. Any defensive player w/in a yard of the line of scrimmage must be lined up completely outside the long snapper’s shoulder pads

    2. No defender can initiate direct contact with the snapper until 1 second elapses from the snap (no rush until you count “One, Mississippi!” boys)

Both of the above apply when the offensive team lines up in a scrimmage kick formation — punt, FG or xtra point. If the team shifts or motions out of the formation, or is in a deep shotgun (think QB quick kick) the rules do not apply

I didn’t see the play in question, but have heard it discussed before during other games.
