Gameday Open Thread: JMU vs. UNH

Alright folks, it’s gameday. And it’s a big one. The first true test of the CAA slate for the Dukes actually. New Hampshire is probably the most consistent program in the league, having made to the playoffs for about 173 straight years (true story, look it up). Kickoff is set for 12:00 noon in Durham, NH. Tune into the game on tv and chat with your fellow JMU fans here. Consider this your official open thread for all pre-game, in-game, and post-game chatter.

Go Dukes!

Keep Rootin!

I’m ready … Are our ‘kids’ warm, well-fed, and ready?

    GO DUUKKKEEEESSSSS!

2 stops on 4th down, a nice bend but don’t break defense so far.

Can’t decide if the color commentator came from Monster Jam or the WWF

  4. Devon / Oct 15 2016

With as annoying as he is, I am going to say the University of Richmond.

  5. jmuparent / Oct 15 2016

Looks like our MRD would fill more seats than all the UNH fans do … 🙂

    CAA for life?

  6. 2004Duke / Oct 15 2016

I feel like I’m watching a basketball game.

  7. 2004Duke / Oct 15 2016

    Alls is a fantastic receiver.

  8. Drake / Oct 15 2016

This has been a boring game so far,in a good way. But as I type this, what an amazing throw and catch for the td. I did not expect UNH to throw 10000 times today.

  9. 2004Duke / Oct 15 2016

I didn’t realize Coach Houston hired Dithers as the new defensive backs coach, but he needs to fire him.

  10. 2004Duke / Oct 15 2016

A “prevent” gameplan only prevents you from winning.

  11. Ken / Oct 15 2016

wow; inspired play calling to run out the clock. Seem to remember Coach saying he had no worries about being able to salt away a game. took a whole 24 seconds off the clock. unh you tube feed guys aren’t too bad.

  12. Ken / Oct 15 2016

secondary play is, to be extrarodinarily generous, absent.

  13. 2004Duke / Oct 15 2016

I’m actually pulling for UNH now because our defense SUCKS.

  14. Ken / Oct 15 2016

lauletta will have a field day against this defense — and I use the term defense as loosely as I possibly can.

  15. Bhagavan / Oct 15 2016

    Epic level meltdown

  16. 2004Duke / Oct 15 2016

    FORTY-TWO TO TWELVE.

  17. Xerk / Oct 15 2016

Even with a win, thus is just embarrassing.

  18. Jackson Hall / Oct 15 2016

What happened to Kloosterman? Haven’t seen him weeks.
Agree youtube broadcast so much better than Madizone

  19. maddukes98 / Oct 15 2016

That was a DEFCON 5 meltdown. Win is a win when it comes to automatic bid – they don’t care about style points but that D won’t get us past the 2nd round.

Ugh. I was only listening to the radio broadcast but the last 10 minutes sounded terrible. even under Withers our defense was not as bad as what seemed to be going on today in the 4th quarter. Defense seems susceptible to trick plays (this week and last week against WM) and it was not even NH’s starting QB who was leading the comeback. I was feeling pretty good about things this year until this but almost losing a 42-12 lead in just 10 minutes does not lead to a lot of confidence. Whoever wrote that Richmond’s and Villanova’s QBs will have a field day is right unless coaching staff figures out something different.Ok get it together in the bye week and let’s get ready for homecoming.

  21. Rob / Oct 15 2016

It’s very tough to get a W on the road at UNH, but there still is no excuse for that 4th quarter meltdown. The defense has developed a nasty habit of completely sleepwalking to the finish as soon as JMU builds up a big lead.

6-1 is pretty damn nice though.

  22. John / Oct 16 2016

Everyone is so negative, were 6-1 and a win is a win damn looking on here I would think we’re one of the worst teams in the CAA. Take Aaron Rodgers advice and RELAX, and keep rooting go dukes bitch

  23. Deacon Danny / Oct 16 2016

A win is a win, and we will gladly take it and move on… but WOW that last 10 minutes was AWFUL. We have seen something like this is lesser degrees of awfulness a couple of times now where, with a big lead in the fourth, the guys seem to lose focus. Coach has mentioned this already a couple of times in post game interviews. Hopefully what happened yesterday will provide Houston with what he needs to finally drive this point home to the guys. Go Dukes!

  24. jmuparent / Oct 16 2016

The only thing worse than watching the 4th quarter meltdown … watching it again on a complete game replay! 🙁

  25. Drake / Oct 16 2016

The defense played great for all but those final 10 minutes. I think they let up a little and then got gassed because UNH threw the ball 70 times! That’s just unheard of. They were on the field for most of that fourth quarter. It’ll be a tough week of practice I’m sure. They went in and snapped UNH’s home winning streak and haven’t won there in 10 years. To go 2-0 on both long trips up north is a great sign. Going 3-1 to end the season should get a first round bye and if they run the table, probably getting a top seed.

  26. Ken / Oct 16 2016

@ John: understand we’ve seen this movie before. 7 games into the season and we still don’t know what kind of defense this team has — the offense has the burden to continue to score, because nobody knows when this defense will just disappear — and the 2 toughest games are still to come.

Bottom line up front: we don’t trust this defense.

Last year we finished off the preseason at 7-0 and headed into the Richmond game off a 51-point demolition of Elon. Over the next 5 games, the defense got absolutely punked to the tune of 40 points a game, 49/game in the 3 losses.

This year sets up similarly – we get a late cupcake in Rhody (1-6) before going to UR, who just stoned ‘Nova, and has a quarterback who can pick apart a secondary that’s not playing well. Then we get ‘Nova in Philly in what will be Andy Talley’s final home game – think they won’t be jacked? The big unknown right now is how badly is their starting QB injured. They finished the UR game with a freshman under center.

I get it that a “W” is a “W” but I also know what my eyes tell me — if Cluley doesn’t make an absolutely awful throw, 5 yards behind his open receiver and right to Reynolds, who know if we even win the Bill/Mary game.

Win with a strong defensive performance at UR without relying on the offense to be virtually flawless and I might be less cynical.

@Ken, But you know what JMU did beat W&M. They made the plays that had to be made period end of story and beat W&M.

JMU absolutely mauled UNH for 50 minutes but WON the game and sit 6-1 and undefeated in CAA play. The defense absolutely lost focus and thought the game was over and no one told UNH that…..so this will give Houston and his staff a very good coaching point going into the off weak. I think the defense was absolutely gassed late in that game. UNH ran I think 100 plays and something like 70 pass plays. That is just insane. But remember a lot of teams go to Durham, NH and LOSE — JMU broke a 19 game home winning streak. UNH got a lot of weird/odd things go their way all in that timespan as well. At the end of the day it is a CAA road win over a ranked opponent that has not lost at home in about 3+ years….I will take it.

Also, that road win at Maine is looking pretty good after they just knocked off a ranked Albany team this weekend.

@ShadyP: I’m a ‘get off my lawn’ person sometimes (ok, a lot of the time), but please don’t think I want my alma mater to lose just to prove a point. 6-1 is a helluva lot better than 4-3 (Maine/W&M results reversed) and I’m happy we are 6-1.

If the last two years have taught us anything, it’s the defense fooled us for much of the season before spitting the bit. I re-watched the game through the 10-minute mark of the 4th quarter to make sure I wasn’t imagining things.

Our corners played soft all game. That’s why UNH was so pass happy. They didn’t throw anything beyond 5-8 yds beyond the LOS until they hit the tight end down the seam for a TD — because they didn’t have to throw it downfield. They could have thrown 6-8 yard outs all day. A 47% defensive 3rd down conversion rate and a 0% defensive red zone success rate (UNH was 6-6) is not a recipe for long term success.

We had trouble getting to the QB w/o blitzing and even that was only so effective. NH was 10-19 on 3rd down conversions and a freshman QB coming in cold off the bench threw for 200 yards in less than a quarter. We did get a really good performance from the DL in the running game, when they could easily have been gashed by looking for another pass.

I’m not any kind of Spider fan, even though I taught there for 2 years, but they punched in a TD on a short run with 10 seconds left in the game — and they were up 16! Is that Rocco being a butthead, or is he ensuring his players execute for 60 minutes?

Please help me understand why this team just decides to turn it off and what real reason I have to not have doubts about the defense.

  29. ShadyP / Oct 18 2016

I think there is an issue on the defensive side of the ball having the mindset to finish off games. The UNH game was really bad example where things started to snowball for them late in the 4th. It is nice to be able to make this a teachable moment without having it bite you in the butt.

I trust this coaching staff to adequately address the concern.
