Gameday Open Thread: JMU vs. Elon

The JMU Dukes welcome the Elon to Bridgeforth Stadium today for the 2016 regular season finale. It’s Senior Day and one last tune up before the playoffs. Bryan Schor has officially been ruled out, so true freshman Cole Johnson will get his first start at QB. Given that, we should probably expect heavy doses of Khalid Abdullah and Cardon Johnson, with a few confidence building throws mixed in. JMU needs a strong showing in order to hang on to one of the top 4 seeds for the playoffs. We’re both going to be in Bridgeforth for this one, but consider this your official open thread for all pre-game, in-game, and post-game chatter.

Go Dukes!

Keep Rootin!

Weather went from sunny and nice to dark and gusty in no time. That coupled with the QB situation will make for a ton of runs.

Is Madizone working for anyone else?

Holy schmolie does Cole Johnson have a long delivery. He brings the ball almost down to his hips during his deliv…..wind up.

There is NOTHING I don’t love about the blackout unis.

@JMU2K1 Absolutely right and this is a great game for Cole to make his debut. Elon’s D takes even longer to break to the ball than he takes to throw. He’s got a bit of Tebow in him but as a planned redshirt probably hasn’t gotten a ton of work in on his motion. Next year I expect he’ll have tighter RM ACTION.

    Arm action

My only worry is that you don’t learn to throw when you are 20, you learn when you are 8. Very hard skill to relearn.

What he does now works against Elon and it may very work during the rest of his JMU career. But it makes me nervous in the long term. He’s playing well today, and that’s what matters at the moment.

Okay, time to rotate in some 2nd, 3rd, and 4th stringers.

Raven Green, what the hell bro

  10. Chris / Nov 19 2016

Kickoff is a live ball. you cant free catch a kickoff.

  11. Chris / Nov 19 2016

Why did they blow the ball dead in the end zone after we kicked off? What am I missing here?

  12. Cory / Nov 19 2016

In college if the ball is not touched by the receiving team and lands in the end zone it is a touchback.

  13. Chris / Nov 19 2016

Thanks Cory. I did not know that.

    *yawn*

Just to beat the dead horse one last time….That MLB wind-up isn’t gonna fly in a few weeks.

  15. Michael / Nov 19 2016

Remember one year ago today… we were (especially me) criticizing Schor’s throwing motion and how that wasn’t going to be successful…

    Just sayin’

  16. Ben / Nov 20 2016

Does anyone know the status of schor for the playoffs?

  17. T2008 / Nov 20 2016

Don’t think we know Schor’s status officially but hopefully he can be back. JMU has a tough road: Have to get past the #1 team in the country for much of the season, the 5 time national champion, and that’s just to get to the championship game. Not to mention a potential UNH rematch in the first game, which we all remember had a very rough end.

We will need the best out of our team to get through this. But hey, the last time we won we did it all on the road in a very tough path as well.

    Lets go dukes!

Nobody’s said it yet so I will. The #1 thing we need to see in the “good” section of the review is that freshman QB. Cole crushed it. Yeah, the motion needs work, but he’ll have next year to work on that. Focusing on Elon, Cole put up massive numbers, was a sharp as you can be (only incompletion was a drop), showed some great poise, smarts running the ball, and ran a playbook that was WIDE open. Can we also give a standing O to Khalid’s incredible season? He’s a bit undersung in this offense, but he’s just delivered week after week. Where would we have been without him against Nova? He will be a handful against everyone we face in the playoffs. Still nervous about the defense heading into the bye week but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Finally, remember when we were picked 3rd or 4th in the preseason polls? What a job Houston did with this team. We’ve bagged on the admin for their hires a lot in the past, but this was a fantastic hire. The energy around the program is amazing. Now if we can get that playoff monkey off the back…

  19. Herb / Nov 21 2016

According to Coach Houston, all the QBs will be back by playoff time.

Just think, if Dithers were still here, Elon would have run up 540 yards offense and it would have been a much closer game.

Coach Houston and his assistants know what they are doing. Terrific job.
