Prediction Contest: JMU vs Akron
It’s prediction time everyone. This weekend the Dukes head to Ohio to play Akron. It’s their one FBS (sorta) game of the season. Both teams got the 2013 season started with a win against an overmatched opponent last week. (JMU won, Akron got crushed. My bad for the mistake.) This game should be a tougher test for each.
Here’s how it works, enter a comment with your prediction for who will win and what the final score will be. The person who comes closest (winner & score) gets to write a guest post next week. Last week we had someone get the score exactly correct and we’ll be publishing his guest post tomorrow. Can we keep the perfect prediction streak going? Can the Dukes keep their perfect season going?

Akron got their asses handed to them by UCF.
Akron plays in InfoCision Stadium. My inner 12 year old will never not think that’s funny.
Their 8 fans will go home disappointed. 23-16 Dukes

@Matt, my bad. I was in a rush and made a careless mistake this morning. Thanks for bringing it to my attention so it could be fixed.
Akron barely got over 100 yards passing and did so with a backup QB who mopped up a losing effort and scored the team’s only TD in the final minutes of the game against UCF.
My negative take – this game will show us how bad our secondary is. Our DBs better be able to handle only the second start of a freshman QB who threw no TDs and 1 INT. If JMU doesn’t show better ball control than last week they could give Akron an easy out.
My positive take – this is an opportunity to continue to build on what was a strong 3rd Quarter vs. Central Connecticut. I see more opportunities for big plays from our safeties, but I hope we don’t have to rely on them for blitzes exposing our weaker DBs.
Offensively, Akron uses a hurry-up style that left them flat and exposed against a team that remained cool under pressure and responded with some home-run passes early on to take the air out of an already flat Akron team.
JMU should be able to run against this team, and with what appears to be another JMU team that is strong in defending the run, I expect Akron to get a few big plays, but mostly sputter on offense. RB Jones gained over 10 yards per play for Akron against UCF, but that was only on five runs, so I take those stats with a grain of salt.
Expect a big day from D. Scott on the ground, easing the pressure on QB Birdsong allowing him more time to hit a few big plays downfield. Akron will get a few sacks – D line pressure seemed to be Akron’s best asset vs. UCF – but the quickness of the big fella will get him out of trouble and keep JMU in good field position.
All in all, if eight teams have already beaten FBS foes, then there is no excuse for a ranked JMU to not put their foot on the throat of a bad Akron team.

31-17 Dukes over Zips. One giant Duke Dog head would have been plenty on the bball court.

24-21 JMU wins
Dukes – 30 Zips – 21 – feeling it will be close most of the game but Dukes pull away in the 4th after we wear out their defense.

JMU – 21
Akron – 16
The Dukes do it again.
Akron wins 31-24.
Lack of pass rush also Kyle Pohl to settle in and go for deeper throws. Battle between our freshmen corners and their freshmen wideouts should be nice. Keep an eye on 6-5 Jerrod Dillard. Zips rushing game also gets going to the tune of 4.5 yards a carry, with DJ Jones having a big game.
D Scott has a solid game on the ground, but with the Dukes trailing two touchdowns going into the fourth Birdsong isn’t able to carry the team to victory.
Zips/Roos 31-17, but will not mind being grossly incorrect. UA beat morgan state in game 3 last year 66-6 for their only victory of 2012. we’re not morgan state, but we’re i’m not sure we’re towson or villanova, either.
UA only 6-13 @ home in their on campus stadium (this is year 5) and it only holds about 5,000 more than the taj ma-mickey. Depends on our LBs ability to cover as UA only averaged about 4-1/2 yds per attempt last week — they did, however, complete 72% of their pass attempts.
Had planned to attend this game and visit the hall of fame in canton, but will instead enjoy military appreciation day at u. of louisville and watch teddy bridgewater’s cardinals feast on their own fcs opponent, eastern kentucky u
