Duke Dog Is Back To Avenge His 2004 Capital One Mascot Challenge Defeat

As some of you undoubtedly remember, Duke Dog was a finalist for the 2004 Capital One Mascot Challenge. Of course he lapped the competition in the fan vote category, only to have the powers that be render said vote 100% meaningless by declaring some other costumed chucklehead the winner. Duke Dog is nothing if not resilient however, and he’s back to avenge his defeat. So here is his nomination video for this year’s contest. It’s got Gangnam Style and Harlem Shake parody highlights so it’s sure to age well.

In CapitalOneGate, they arbitrarily awarded the vicotry to Monte, that damn wllie nelson bear from the U of Montana. Ironically, we had just soundly beaten them for the 2004 national championship on the football field.

CapOne received so much hate mail following the “incident”, they issued a formal, public apology letter and changed the rules beginning in 2005.

To this very day, I refuse to do any business with capital one. I even occationally send hateful, smartass responses to their credit card offers. Hopefully they have gotten the message that we take our Duke Dog very, very seriously around here.

Haha. I actually was pretty annoyed by the entire situation back in 2004 as well. Glad to know I’m not alone.

Curt Dudley voicing ‘most interesting mascot in the nation’ at the end totally put this over the top.

Gangham Style is so played, same with Harlem Shake. Hopefully they got the videos 2 months ago.

Monte definitely got a make-up call for the FCS Championship loss back in 2004. JMUSB Co-Chair Todd and I were actually in Nags Head and I think everyone in the room was alarmed by our impassioned reaction when the winning mascot was revealed. The popular vote had been a landslide for Duke Dog.

Coach Brady was in Richmond today at a High School talking with a coach. No word on a new contract. He was very gracious and thanked everyone for their support through the tournaments.

CAN YOU AT LEAST PUT AN ASTERIX BESIDE “DEFEAT”??

Duke Dog won in 2004. That’s the only experience I’ve had with Captial One. As it was clearly a corrupt competition, I see Capital One as a corrupt company. I don’t know any of my friends from JMU that bank with them, specifically for this reason.

To this day…..I will never do business with CAPITAL ONE based on how this campaign was handled. Several of my friends feel the same way.
