JMU Cannot Let Kansas State Steal Start Wearing Purple

In case you missed it, here is the video from the MRDs pre-game performance of Start Wearing Purple. As we previously stated, the band sounded great. The crowd participation element has a ways to go though. But as we saw with the Pep Band during hoops season, it will happen. And it would be great if it could happen quickly, because Kansas State is trying to steal it.

That’s right. Kansas State is also jumping on the SWP bandwagon. Boo! I came across a KSU video using the song on Youtube while embedding the above version. This is JMU’s thing people. You’d think Kansas State would know not to mess with FCS schools after last week, but apparently not. So learn the words, sing along, and spread the word. This is a great tradition in the making.

I was walking past band practice the other day and I overheard the band director saying that he has been offered a lot of money from other schools to play the song, but that he has up until now refused every request. He was telling the band that there are other versions of the song going around, but that the consensus among band directors is that JMU’s version is the best. I’m not a band guy, I don’t know much about the situation, and I’m only passing on what I overheard somebody saying through a megaphone. K-State will have to pay for it if they plan on playing that song.

I just came across your blog. Thanks for the awesome updates. Hope to see people in Selaware on the 28th. I will be blaring start wearing purple in the UD season ticket lot. Go Dukes!

It’s cool that they have the lyrics up on the video board, but the text gets a bit muddled by all of the “Will You Marry Me” and “Garber B-Section 4ever”-type stuff that they have scrolling around the bottom.

This song is legit, and I hope it sticks around. If we could turn Bridgeforth into a giant Russian wedding for three minutes or so each Saturday, then I’ll be okay with the fact that we’re still pining around in the CAA in 2030. Wait. No I won’t.

Lol, get over it, JMU. Our video was posted before your band even got on campus to start learning how to play their instruments in your cute little stadium. K-Staters were wearing Purple before your Normal School for Women was even created. Sorry, posers!

Yo Willie, maybe you would like to see a video of us playing it from the NCAA tournament in March 2013, or maybe one or August 2012, or April 2012, or maybe even one from March 2012. Please take your pick. Bottom line, you’re late to the party whether you want to believe it or not, and we had a claim on the song (as in played it at games) before you even heard the song. Have a nice day.

I am not a supporter of this song played by the MRDs, but I do love it at the basketball games played by the pep band. However, Willie, you are seriously misinformed. Our Pep Band actually has been playing this for years and years, not too long after the song came out. I don’t think anyone cares if you’ve been wearing purple longer. Are you so dumb as to think that makes K-State better somehow?

It’s cool…I’m sure they make a habit of copying traditions from schools with “cute little stadiums”

Sorry JMU, when I wrote this song, I was thinking of national powerhouse KSU. Frankly, I had never even heard of JMU until someone directed me to your little blog here.

    Warm Regards,
    Eugene Hutz
