Any Suggestions for the Silly Season?

Thank goodness we have a coaching search and hire to break down this spring!

Thank goodness we have a coaching search and hire to break down this spring!

So as we learned back in the 2009-10 school year when we started this project, two old men (that’s us) who live 2 and 3 hours from campus respectively simply aren’t capable of covering all of the spring sports in any way that isn’t mere regurgitation of the official JMUSports coverage. We get excited when teams like Softball or Women’s Golf have great seasons. And we’re certainly gaining hope that the Good/Ford Express may indeed be headed for an historic run that will sustain us well past May graduation this year. But we’ve also spent huge portions of the last five spring seasons discussing, arguing over, and generally ranting about, potential conference realignment news. But with our recent capitulation to our #CAAlyfesentence, we’ve got even less ideas what you all want to hear about as we head towards the end of the 15-16 year, much less throughout the truly silly summer season. We’ll obviously have some Football Spring Game coverage (hopefully with a little input from our redshirt/freshman guru Mike Evangelista) and we’ll be tracking JMUSB fave Gabby Weiss and crew on the links along with all the other teams (lax) we hope will be seriously in the hunt for some hardware, but at this point we wanted to turn to you all, our invaluable community and source of ideas, to see what you’d be interested in us trying to fight over this spring? So let us know in the comments or on Twitter/FB what you’d like us to dive into. And yes, these ideas are welcome to be non-sports, as the oldest of our readers know we used to invest significant offseason time to “Late 90’s H’burg bands” (let’s hear it for Puddleduck!), defunct Valley eateries (Luigi’s how we miss thee), and of course the late great Sanjeev and Mike’s Chevron.

I’m a 1981 grad and I spent 4 years working on the Logan’s Run fund raiser project for Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Curious if anyone has any history of that project (defunct and when, still going strong, etc.) Have any of you youngsters ever heard of this?

I’d love to see some Diamond Dukes baseball coverage here.

Seems like football and basketball never have DC-area opponents anymore. I know it’s harder in football, but DC does have two FCS schools in Georgetown and Howard. Their “stadiums” suck, but it would be a great chance to see the Dukes in what’s got to be their largest major city alumni base. Basketball has even less of an excuse. There are plenty of DC-area schools they could schedule: Mason, Maryland, Georgetown, Howard, American, George Washington, etc. If JMU sports wants to go big time, they need to better connect with their alumni – and it’s largest base just 2 hours from campus. Heck, I’ll write this piece myself if you give me a guest spot.

Best new edition to the burg… after 2005.

Has there been any movement on a new basketball coach?

How about some reminiscing from some of your blog commenters on their time at JMU. Might be interesting to see how the on-campus experience from the different eras of JMU sports colors their opinions and comments.

How about some good old-fashioned pessimism/fatalism for you tonight:

    1. Our AD appears to be “woe is me” in regards to keeping Coach Brooks, to wit:

“We’re willing to obviously make an offer on our side that we think is attractive,” Bourne said. “But we are also fully cognizant that Virginia Tech is an ACC school and with their resources and package that they’ve put together, there’s clearly a difference between what a CAA school can do and what an ACC school can.” (Courtesy: DN-R)

    and this back-handed compliment:

“He’s been a person that sort of put the face to women’s basketball, along with folks like Shelia Moorman, who really put the foundation in place,” Bourne said. “But Kenny’s done an excellent job.” (Courtesy: DN-R)

    2. If #1 happens, what are the odds that PHall graduates this spring and plays immediately @ VT as a graduate transfer.

    3. If #1 and #2 happen our WBB circles the drain rapidly — who’s the next Kirby, Alexis, TYoung, Evans, PHall or Gwathmey?

    4. We apparently are considering a high school/prep school coach for our MBB program. Understand he’s an alum and great at the prep level, but really? Sherman Dillard redux?

    5. The other candidate is someone who has lost 3 straight years in this conference tourney final — but hey, at least his team made it past the quarters…

Our athletics program is not too far from becoming a fully involved dumpster fire. How long before Coach Dean bolts for a higher profile softball gig (read: Power 5)
