OGL Weekly Links: Home Game in Richmond

City Stadium after a recent Dukes "road" game.

If you haven’t heard the news by now, the JMU administration is already discussing the possibility of “hosting” playoff games at City Stadium in Richmond. On one hand, I’m thrilled that the school is being pro-active and attempting to line-up an alternate venue since Bridgeforth will be under construction as soon as the regular season ends. Plus, take a look at that pic. We always draw big crowds there. On the other hand, we’re 3 games into the regular season and I sort of feel like this is talking to your pitcher during a no-hitter.

The Dukes offense wasn’t much to brag about, but the defense and special teams were outstanding in the win over Liberty. As a result JMU remains at #3 in the polls and a couple of Dukes pick up weekly CAA awards. Taveion Cuffee was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week and Stephon Robertson was the Rookie of the Week.

The Dukes host the red hot Delaware Blue Hens this weekend at Bridgeforth Stadium. The venue hasn’t been kind to Delaware. Head Coach K.C. Keeler notes that “It’s a hostile environment. Even their band will cuss at you.”

Coach L and the field hockey squad have gotten back on track and put together a nice little 3 game winning streak. Defender Lindsay Cutchins had a particularly nice week.

The women’s soccer team moved back to .500 on the season with a big come from behind win over Northeastern.

On the men’s side, the JMU soccer team is off to a 6-1 start. CJ Sapong has been red hot and currently is number two in the nation in scoring, with 6 goals and 6 assists so far. The Dukes finally cracked the rankings this week and sit at #25.

Going to Saturday’s game against Delaware? Better be ready to “Purple Out”.

JMUSB, I caught the tail end of some radio hub-bub saying Mickey bashed the fans after the game for showing up late, or leaving early, or something vs. Liberty. Did you guys hear that or have any thoughts, I missed what was said?

I missed the Mickey Matthews rant. Unfortunately, I did show up a little late for the Liberty game despite the best efforts of TD to keep me on track.

Great game. Great environment. Hope to be back soon.

Mickey has been sort of outspoken about his desire to see the stands full at kick-off. I can’t say I blame him, but I know I’ve shown up late in the past despite my best efforts. I think a large portion of the fanbase (myself included) is still trying to figure out the entire gameday experience. Tailgating is still kind of a new and right now there is no queue to head into the stadium or any sort of pre-game tradition to participate in once you’re seated.

I think these things will fix themselves over time and it’s all part of building a passionate fanbase. I hear Mickey though and I’m gonna make a better effort at future games to get there a little earlier.

You make two good points here: The first being the no-hitter reference. That scares me just as much as it scares you, but then again, Jeff Bourne has no feelings. And your comment about us not having an established pregame and game time plan could not be more correct. I usually head over when I can’t chug anymore natty ice…maybe they could make Duke Dog growl into a giant megaphone 15 minutes before the game to make sure everyone starts heading over…that would be pretty sweet.
And also, this may be premature in your blogs existence, but there were 17 comments on that Liberty post…what about a JMUSB function at homecoming. For instance, beers at Dave’s the morning before a game, or setting up a tent at homecoming with a huge JMUSB banner. My ideas really have no direction here…but they are still ideas!

    does Dave’s offer daycare services?

I remember going downtown and bar hopping as a sophomore one homecoming when my newly graduated friends came back to town. I don’t believe Dave’s was one of the stops, but there were bars open before the game started at 1…at least I think it started at 1. Basically, if they don’t offer daycare services, they should.

Homecoming will probably be too hectic, but we’re considering doing a JMUSB pre-game event for the W&M game. We’ll keep everyone posted.

Not to keep talking during the no-no, but I’ll be glad to see you guys finally make City Stadium your official home. It’d be, like, ironic or something. Now if only UR can recover and make it to be your opponents for the occasion. That’d be, like, poetic or something.
