JMU Lands 4 on All-CAA Teams and is Picked to Finish 3rd in CAA

Towson's Terrance West was named 2012 CAA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

The 2012 CAA Football Media Day doesn’t even start for a few hours, but someone had an itchy trigger finger and already posted the highlights last night. The league’s media directors and coaches have picked JMU to finish 3rd in the annual preseason poll. The Dukes were right behind Towson and ODU, which finished in first and second respectively. Now I’m sure the JMUSB fans from the ODU message boards who think we’re the most bitter and pathetic bloggers on Earth (love you guys) will be shocked to hear this, but I have no argument whatsoever with JMU’s place in the rankings. In fact I would have voted Towson and ODU ahead of them to. Although it’s worth pointing out that last year’s consensus preseason champ, William & Mary, finished in 7th place. And the team picked to finish just behind them, JMU, only finished 6th, so…er, never-mind.

The full results of the preseason poll, with number of first place votes in parentheses, are below.

1.  Towson (12)
2.  Old Dominion (7)
3.  James Madison (1)
4.  New Hampshire (2)
5.  Delaware
6.  Maine
7.  William and Mary
8.  Villanova
9.  Richmond
10.  Rhode Island
11.  Georgia State

JMU also laned 4 players on the All-CAA Preseason Offense and Defense first teams. Earl Watford and Dae’Quan Scott followed up their preseason All-America selections, with All-CAA honors. Watford was selected as an offensive lineman and Scott as a kick return specialist. Their teammate (and JMUSB favorite) Brian Barlow was selected as an h-back. Stephon Robertson was the lone member of the JMU defense on the preseason all conference team.

We’ll need to wait for Media Day to actually take place before commenting on any other highlights. If I had to guess, we can expect plenty of whining from KC Wheeler, some funny quotes from Mickey, and absolutely no questions about conference expansion if Tom Yeager has his way.

I disagree. I think JMU will be the team to beat this year. Your recuiting has been just short of amazing. Your transfers are top notch. Yours is the team I most worry about. Would not surprise me if the season championship boils down to the last game…..on tv……..at JMU.

Fair point Gary. I definitely think JMU can contend this year and like how the schedule sets up for them, with Towson and ODU at home. I just don’t think preseason polls are anything to get too worked up about and believe that by virtue of the fact that ODU & Towson shared the title last year, they deserve to be considered favorites again.

“Dukes were right behind Towson and ODU, which finished in first and second respectively.”

Someone queue up “The world turned upside down”, please.
