33 Days Till Kickoff!
Doesn’t that headline just make you all warm and tipsy?!Ok, or for some of us it may be more of a kick in the ass to spend time with the fam while we still can, but no denying the fact that in just over four weeks football is back (UNC/USC in 31 days and JMU in BFS two days later!).
That said, we’ve still got plenty of time to address serious topics like CAA previews and discovering how to properly mock Stony Brook and Albany. We’re also going to be gauging Dukes fans’ expectations for the upcoming season (with 24 playoff slots and a hugely diluted playoff field it’s pretty clear what MM’s responsibility is if he wants to keep his job when JMU moves up – wait, was that the whole season in a nutshell? Oops).
But first, obviously, we’ve got to gauge Dukes fans’ interest in the two of us buying out Dave’s Taverna?! As many of you know, Dave’s closed its doors a couple of weeks ago. Scuttlebutt is that the actual Dave’s personal financial difficulties ultimately cost this institution its iconic status and dealt a blow to Downtown’s resurgence. So Rob and I got to talking over a couple of Starr Hill Grateful Pale’s (because damn it, it’s still July and Octoberfest/Pumpkin beers should NOT be here yet) and we joked about starting a Kickstarter project for JMUSB to buy Dave’s! Of course, first we need to do a little market research. Please complete the following survey:
1) Do you support the awesome idea of JMUSB taking over Dave’s?
2) Do you have any information whatsoever regarding whether Dave’s is actually for sale or was the space just leased? (Preferably in some kind of bankruptcy special or something)
3) Would you agree to support changing the name back to Gus’s? If not, would you agree to support subsidizing the beer purchases of those who do support this through an old-guy beer special throwback night where you pay the difference?
4) We can keep gyros, seasoned fries, and spanikopita and pretty much get rid of everything else on the new menu, right?
5) We can pay whatever bribe money is required to the Harrisonburg councilmembers to allow for more freedom on the roof (we can also call it the roof, not the “terratsa”), right?
Thanks so much for your time and attention in this survey! Also, I’m pretty sure we can mock Stony Brook and Albany just by saying “it’s Stony Brook and Albany?,” right?!

Keep the steak and cheese pitas too!!
1) Yes.
2) No.
3) I only really know it as Dave’s, but changing to Gus’s not only plays to the olds but also signals that a real change occurred here. Go w/ Gus.
4) Add chicken souvlaki to the list, please.
5) They don’t really call it the terratsa, do they?
1) Yes.
2) No.
3) I think we should call it JMUSBar
4) Steak and cheese also.
5) jesus yes
extra credit. I’ll gladly join this venture with cold hard cash.
I second the Steak and Cheese on a pita!!!
If you take away the Steak and Cheese on a pita, I will call my banners and lead an army of angry Dukes to wipe you off the face of this Earth.
Also the tomato and mozzarella salad was banging.
1. Yes
2. No

If I had the money, I’d be all in. Keep the pizza, it’s great. Name it Rob and Todd’s, it flows

According to the rumor mill, there have been possible talks and ideas being thrown around about the Dodger taking over and moving into Dave’s.

I like the JMUSBar idea (although not everyone will get the tie-in)
roof – vip
If my career as a writer takes off, I’ve thought about opening a JMU/Mountaineer Sports Bar. Like, I think about it nearly every day. If you guys have the finances I HIGHLY recommend this plan!
1) Obviously.
2) No, but I can totally find out for you.
3) As long as there’s beer flowing and steak and cheese available, you can call it Rob and Todd’s greasy ass hole for all I care.
4) See above.
5) Not only do I openly mock people that won’t call it “Dave’s rooftop,” but I was actually corrected by a hostess once when I asked if the rooftop was open yet in late spring a couple years ago.
Appendix A: If Eastern Kentucky has one respectable year of football/baseball, can they join the CAA too? (Zing.)
Appendix B: Let’s spread the mockery around. I wanna see some College of Charleston jabs before November rolls around.
1. Abso-freaking-lutely
2. No, sorry.
3. Call it whatever you want. 🙂
4. Keep the tsatsiki sauce, too!
5. Roof, and yes!
If we finish worse than 8-4 it is time to clean house.
You saw it here first.
So happy that everyone feels the same way I do about the steak and cheese pita…easily the best steak and cheese around. The Dodger moving into the Dave’s space would be terrible. Dave’s was a cool hang-out…not some hipster, let’s have open mic free-form poetry 4 nights a week type of place.
Rob and Todd opening a sports bar there makes sense. I mean, “The Sporting News” already has there own chain of restaurants. Time to take JMUSB to the next level haha
The dodger at the Dave’s location would be great. Bottom floor for dancing. Second floor for seats. Roof for talking or live shows. Sooo much potential. Not just hipster shit or whatever people think the dodger is for. So much more goes in there. So much more. Unless there is another place that is unabtrusively open to the lgbt population in Harrisonburg among everyone else.
Maybe “Dave’s” or whatever it becomes can take over the current dodger and dodge can take Dave’s.
