Some Modifications for That 20 Signs You Went to JMU List
Buzzfeed can be a sports blogger’s best friend in the offseason. Tonight we had the good fortune of stumbling upon this 20 Signs You Went to JMU listicle on the site while we were waiting for football season to get here. (Seriously, that’s what we do now. We just…wait for it.) Against all odds, our tired old asses could actually relate to the overwhelming majority of the items. And it warms our heart to know that 12 is still true. Of course we had a slightly different take on few of them. Regarding 16 for instance, we never called it Rose Library back when we were students either. We just called it a big empty hill across 81. But I digress.
It’s a fun list. And it gives us the chance to date ourselves by pointing out that any list of signs you went to JMU during our time, would have to include a few modifications. In no particular order the following things would absolutely have to make an appearance: dime drafts, Luigi’s pizza, waiting forever for Luigi’s pizza because your waiter was hotboxing in the walk in beer cooler behind Luigi’s, homecoming on the Row, the VAX, Gus’s/Dave’s, Puddleduck, the steakhouse, Mike’s Chevron, Blimpie, Uncle Ron, blue JMU baseball hats, hacky sack on PED, Blue Fox, Door Four Subs, and well, that’s all I’ve got. Because we’re old and can’t remember much you see. And we’re sure you’ve got your own list to share anyway.

I still have my gold JAC!
I still have my paw print JAC card (pre-gold JAC)…now that is a real status symbol. I went to E-hall when I went back for homecoming a year ago–D-hall still wins my nostalgic heart! My personal list would include taking pictures with James using various props to dress him up for the occasion and karaoke at The Pub (RIP).
the #2 stat on the resource recovery plant/ east campus factory is incorrect… it just burns trash, but it does cloud up in the rain. The smell wafts from the poultry plants around town. But then again that makes me the old guy yelling about inaccurate things so i’ll sit down and be quiet.
Everything and Full Stop at JMs, beers at Reddish Knob, grafitti at Spanky’s, filling up my dorm room fridge for the weekend with takeout containers from Pepe’s, and bagels from Mr. J’s.
I’m not nearly as old as you poor bastards and #12 should always be true, some traditions should never die.

Thanks JMUSB for updating the list to include things older folks such as myself actually remember from JMU. Klines would have to make my list along with the sound of someone kicking over their bottle in the middle of a movie at Grafton Stovall. I feel bad for colleges where #12 is not a given (I’m looking at you Hokies).
I still have the white ID before the purple JAC cards. And heavens YES! on the VAX, D-Hall, all the wonderful beer, and the beauty of Hillside Field in the springtime. I’m still generally amazed by the campus on the Convo side of 81. And how about the creepy underpass tunnel we used to get over to the Convo for basketball games?

If you guys are interested in the history of JMU, check out the book Rooted on Bluestone Hill. I stumbled on it on Amazon and its been an awesome coffee table book read.
I really miss Luigi’s. Best subs of my life, plus their hot sauce was homemade and I would actually drink it, that’s how good it was.
Toilet paper at the Zoo for the good guys’ first basket. A great tradition– although no so great if you got wasted after the game and needed some from your dorm bathroom.
Watching football on the Hill!
