Gameday Open Thread: JMU vs. Stony Brook
It’s the final home game for Stephon Robertson and the rest of JMU’s seniors. The Dukes need a win and lots of help to keep their playoff dreams alive. Kick-off is set for 3:30 in Bridgeforth. Consider this your open thread for all pre-game, in-game, and post-game chatter. Here’s to hoping the seniors close out an undefeated season at home. Root fer Dukes.

Thank you to all the seniors for their dedication to Jmu; good luck today and i will be rootin’ from louisville.
Richmond just did their part. Amazing win for the Spiders over UD. Still hate them, but thanks. Go get it Dukes!
just got my madizone working — not encouraging at all…
good blocking on the screen; scott’s patience made it a huge play.
Anyone in driving distance of Bridgeforth want to play some D?
@ shady_p — 1/2 way to your prediction of 2 10+ yd penalties against wells
The first question for the new coach should be: “how do you feel about a North/south running game”?
another horrid throw on a roll left by the qb…ugh.
Right about now is when a coach would make a QB switch. On wait, we can’t because our QB2 is walk-on true freshman, which is because MM told all QB recruits this offseason that the best they could do was compete for QB2. Good job.
It’s amazes me how even when the players are clearly not executing, the blame still always comes back to MM.
Come on guys….those were terrible throws by Birdsong and our defense has not been good.
take a knee…please
apparently, “run first” for stony brook means inside the 10 after they’ve passed their way down the field against our ‘defense.’
looks like a postal job by the defense as they are completely mailing it in…
way more aggressive than i thought they’d be; nicely done!
@just sayin-
The other team is vastly better coached than we are, as if that isn’t obvious. That being said… the players are not ready to play today, either.
Oh wait…that gets back to coaching too.
I made a positive/optimistic comment this week about our defense…. aaaaand they just gave up 31 in the first HALF.
Won’t make that mistake again.
Will SB get 50 today? #mickeymustgo
don’t blame coach for being peeved; missed call. that said, any reason why we continually whiff on free shots?
the plug is out on the bottom of the stadium; fans are streaming for the parking lots….
The laziness of our secondary is appalling.
I’ll be switching to basketball at 6:30. Stick a fork in this game and this season.
When your team plays with no effort or enthusiasm and your stands aren’t full, you have a coaching problem. #MickeyMustGo #HeWontMissed
nice! got his shoulders turned so he could get the ball to where it needed to go.
Maybe we can hire stony brook’s coach. He seems to know what he is doing.
Ironic that Mickey has totally been up everyone’s ass on offense the last few years, including his coaches, and meanwhile his defense has become an embarrassment.
Stat of the week: we gave up more points in the first HALF than anyone has given up to SB in any game this season.
Is there any way to watch the basketball game? This is beyond embarrassing.
pretty soon, the band will be by itself…as for me, i am off to a Dad/Daughter dance. wonder how many jmu tackles i can break on the way.
will be interesting to see how the off-season plays out in the burg. if the program continues to regress unabated the school will have to invest in tarps for sections of the upper deck.
ok, that’s pitchfork and torches harsh, and not a likely outcome, but the reality is that it takes much longer to get fans interested again than it does to chase them away.
They are trying to run out the clock, and we are playing 2 deep safeties on every play. Great coaching right there.
The fact SB went for it on 4th down in their own territory with2mins left shows a total disrespect for JMU’s defense. Nobody is intimidated by JMU anymore. #noswagger
Birdsong bad, Robertson bad, Dq bad. When three of the ‘best’ jmu players look that bad on the field you are going to lose regardless of the coaching.
Just back to the hotel after being at the game. I know Cory has played the game and knows more than me but I did not think Birdsong played all that badly, other than the 2 interceptions which were bad and one gave SB a short field, but I felt he was not a major reason JMU lost. I just keep seeing our defensive backs playing such a soft coverage that all teams just seem to throw those quick out routes or just throw underneath the coverage for easy pickups of 10-15 yards and today sometimes more. And on some of SB’s longer touchdown passes our defensive backs did even see the ball coming and. Had their backs turned. And the tackling seemed to be pretty poor. Can’t see us winning at Towson next week so if that occured it would leave us at 6-6. I am ?ure MM would say “many places would be happy with .500.”
@Cory – yeah we sucked today, while you are busy defending MM, whose job is it to get them ready to play??? If it is MM’s then he is the PROBLEM and should go. If not who is the problem.
At this point any coach would be stupid to run against us because we cannot stop anyone that wants to throw the ball.
His QBR was 117 which is respectable but two INTs on very bad passes when your team is already in a hole can’t be measured. However you are right in that the defense was just ugly today and in general lately.
Sad to see it end this way. That’s all that came across my mind as I sat in the stands today.
I’m even more sad that the current JMU Admin will allow him to languish as a lame duck next year.
To all the non-apologists: To quote Lee Corso… “NOT so fast my friend….” I realize that nobody actually watched JMU football prior to 2004, but in 2003 we got our doors blown off in Harrisonburg by perennial doormat Northeastern…who doesn’t even have a football team anymore… and the ENTIRE stadium chanted “FI-RE MICK-EY” for the entire 4th quarter.
He is still the head coach 10 seasons later. Don’t bo so sure JMU doesn’t keep him around through the end of his contract, at the very least. Especially since we don’t even have an FBS invitation yet.
That was about as ugly as a defense can look. If MM is a defense oriented coach, then why can’t this defense tackle it cover receivers? If players aren’t motivated to play, especially on their senior day, then the coaching staff has lost the players’ respect. If these same problems continue for four or five years on a row, then the coach may be incapable of fixing the problems. And if the coach can’t fix the problem, then the coach needs to go!
How can the JMU administration even consider a jump to FBS with a football team that can’t beat second rate fcs schools or even conservative .500. The fans are already not showing up for games, the alumni are already not donating or buying season tickets. And they won’t unless there is a winning team on the field that can energize the fan base. Please don’t make things worse by putting a crappy team with an outdated coach into a division with a bunch of directional schools no one has heard of or cares about. People will not pay the price for that kind of disappointment, and it will only hurt basketball and the non-revenue sports.
Worst defensive effort that I have seen by JMU for as far back as I can remember.
The secret is out …
To beat the Dukes, just throw a pass! 🙁
Here’s to next year … 🙂
Seems very likely to me O’Cain gets the head coach job:
1) JMU doesn’t like big changes, nor are they going to break the bank on a coach. This would be more of a transition where some staff keep their jobs. New defensive coordinator comes in, and most importantly, new eyes at the top on who to recruit.
2) He’s been a head coach
3) Offense is clearly better schematically this year than last.
4) Avoids asking Birdsong to learn new offense for a third straight year
