Our Thorough, Heavily Researched, and Detailed Thought Piece of Cost of Attendance Subsidies

executive boardYou might not like Cost of Attendance (COA) subsidies. They might not align with your view of amateurism. But COA is the new full athletic scholarship. Schools that want to compete athletically, will pay them.

No COA eventually leads either to irrelevance @ the D-I level

    or

the nicest football facility in D-II.

You must mean D-III, Ken. Then this administration wouldn’t have to pay athletic scholarships at all.

In terms of the total athletic budget, COA is a very small amount. Not offering it results in less athletic team success and less student attendance & school spirit.

Sounds like a ‘No Brainer’ …

That is the best and simplest synopsis of COA. It really is that simple. This could be a 1 slide powerpoint that even Alger should be able to understand.

Unfortunately, Alger drew a line in the sand with the we-won’t-do-coa letter.

Our strategy now consists of lying in the bed we made. There is no light at the end of this tunnel

As soon as I come up with any more “we’re f***ed” metaphors, I’ll pass them along.

There seems to be consensus on this blog on this issue. I don’t disagree. Not sure I see much point ranting and raving here though. Is anyone planning on doing something productive about this (that sounds worse than I mean it to). It seems to me that concerned alumni should organize and make their voices heard by the administration.

REALLY? ?? The beginning of the end…smh!

@OuterBanksDuke1983 We’ve spoken to some influential boosters about it and they suggest everyone who has a strong opinion on COA, email the BOV or Jeff Bourne. The more people who voice their opinion on the matter, the better.

Let’s be honest here…..JMU is not a big time program. It will almost never be one for the big sports. Even if they tomorrow announced they were moving to the FBS beginning next year, they would not be a big time program.

While I do not have all – or any for that matter – information about school funds, overall the endowment is small. Which means the school must rely on tuition and public funding for everything. The COA would be a good bet if the basketball team and football teams were in a big 5 conference. That will never happen. Why waste that money when it can go towards other more important aspects?
