Well, that just about does it. UMass defeated JMU 21-14. Barring a miracle, or just an astoundingly bad decision by the selection committee, the 2010 JMU Dukes are not going to the playoffs. JMU looked good at times. Unfortunately they didn’t look good in times that mattered. It went from a looking like a confidence building win, to complete disaster in a matter of minutes in the 3rd quarter. Just a quick and ugly turn of events.
I think we’ll probably have more to say about this later, but this next 3 weeks are absolutely huge for JMU. Not in terms of a playoff birth (ain’t happening), but it terms of setting the tone for the program going forward. JMU has invested tens of millions of dollars in the football program and will be playing in the best FCS stadium in the land next season. The money wasn’t spent so that 10,000 fans can more comfortably watch a mediocre team try to finish above .500. It was build so 25,000 fans could go nuts watching the Dukes win championships. Mickey Matthews isn’t going anywhere, but his job will be much easier if he ends the season with some big wins. Offensive Coordinator Jeff Durden however, is sitting on a seat that is getting hotter by the day. Or at least it should be.
We’re going to give you the quick summary good, bad, and ugly style below. Before we do that however, let’s share a little experience Todd and I had while watching the game.
The Awkward
Todd and I met at Baileys for the viewing party yesterday. Hat tip to Baileys for showing the games and for the Duke Club for making the arrangements. The set-up is pretty sweet, with a ratio of about 2 tvs showing the JMU game for every fan in attendance. Not tough to do when only 4 people show up (literally), but I digress. Anyway Todd and I were proudly sporting our JMUSB “Old Guys Leave” t-shirts and enjoying the surprisingly entertaining first half, when were approached by an old guy. A legitimately old guy. This was not just a guy college kids would think was old. This was a guy who folks that lived through prohibition would call old. Anyway, he strutted up started a conversation and then blurted out “What’s up with the shirts?” Thank God Todd was there, because he’s generally just a nicer and more outgoing person that me. Todd politely explained the story and then turned the conversation to college football. On the other hand, I was completely freaking out inside. I thought this geriatric bar fly was ready to throw down. I mean he’d have nothing to lose. What would stop him from busting a bottle over our heads in an effort to stand up for his kind? I’m pretty sure the only thing on his agenda for the day was trying not to die, so he clearly had the time. He’d go out in a blaze of glory and be a legend at every assisted living center in America if he took a swing at us with his dying breath. It was tense for minute there. Alright, back to football.
The Good
Dudzik and the Dukes first half offense. It’s a cliche to say that a football team just needs to “play loose” or “have fun out there”, but for the first time in months it looked like that what the Dukes were doing. They were mixing it up and getting multiple players involved and it was working. They even closed the half with a 97 yard TD scoring drive to go up 14-3. I’ve always said that Dudzik is at his best when he just relaxes and gets into a rhythm. That’s exactly what he did yesterday. The rushing game was working and Drew was having success tossing it to different receivers. For the first time in ages, the offense was fun to watch. Until the second half that is.
The Bad
The state of the injury depleted defense. The D has been rock solid all season and they came up big a number of times yesterday, keeping UMass out of the endzone. The injuries just caught up with them though and they couldn’t do anything to stop the Minutemen for much of the second half. I’ve been proud of the effort the D put forth all season and yesterday was no exception. By the end there were just too many regulars missing and too many guys playing out of position. The offense disappeared and the team was relying on the D to save the day once again. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get it done.
The Ugly
The play-calling down the stretch. I don’t want this to be one of those blogs that pretends to have a greater grasp of game strategy than the coaching staff, but it’s tough to figure out what was going on during the last gasp 2 minute drill. As I said before, to me, it appears as if Dudzik plays better when he gets into a rhythm. He was getting into a nice little groove on the last drive and had the Dukes looking like they were gonna score. Then the coaches decide to mix it up, take Dudzik out, and insert Kavon Seaton for the wildcat. WTF was the point of that? UMass was on its heels and the Dukes looked like they were rolling. Seaton promptly got sacked and it completely took the wind out of JMU’s sails. A few failed plays later and the game is over. The game didn’t come down to that one play, but I just thought it was a stupid decision.
So now the Dukes move on to Richmond and are playing for pride here on out. Missing the playoffs sucks, but JMU still has a chance to finish 7-4 and knock off two state rivals over the next few weeks. We still have the Tech win, right?
The JMU Dukes and UMass Minutemen clash in Bridgeforth Stadium this Saturday. Like the Dukes, the Minutemen got off to a hot start and had their fans thinking about a deep playoff runs. Just like JMU however, UMass has stumbled lately and now just making the playoffs is going to be tough. Both teams enter Saturday’s game in the midst of 2 game slumps. It’s possible a 4 loss CAA team could make the playoffs, but not likely. Therefore there is a good chance the loser of this game will see its playoff dreams go up in smoke.

What I Know About The University of Massachusetts
I know absolutely nothing about UMass the school. I kind of imagine it as a school full of girls in JUICY sweatpants who describe everything as “wicked awesome” and guys who put creatine in their Four Loko while wearing Red Sox shirts with the sleeves cut off. Maybe it’s actually a picturesque campus populated by engaging students eager to make the world a better place. Since I don’t want to do any research or fact checking, let’s just go with the former description.
What I Know About UMass the Football Program
It’s pretty good, having won the National Championship in 1998 and losing in the championship game to App State in 2006. Former Head Coach Mark Whipple racked up a 49-26 record in his tenure, before departing to become the Offensive Coordinator at the University of Miami before last season. Under Head Coach Kevin Morris, UMass went 5-6 last year. It was the Minutemen’s first losing season since 2001. As we explained in our season preview, in good years, UMass contends for championships. In bad years, the Minutemen are still a very tough out.
The Highs and Lows of the UMass Season
Earlier in the season, UMass was my semi-dark horse (you can’t call a CAA team a real dark horse) to make a run. They opened the season by beating W&M and almost stole a road win at Michigan. They’ve really come back to earth lately, losing an ugle 11-10 game to Richmond and then getting embarrassed 39-13 by the suddenly dangerous New Hampshire Wildcats in front of the largest crowd ever for a CAA game (nearly 33,000 fans at Gillette Stadium!)
UMass Weapons
The Minutemen have a pretty scary passing attack, led by senior QB Kyle Havens. Havens threw for 450 yards last weekend in the loss to New Hampshire. He’s got 9 TDs this year for what has become the top passing offense in the CAA. UMass also has 2 of the CAA’s top 3 rushers. John Griffin and Jonathan Hernandez split carries and combine for 160 yards a game.
How UMass Can Win
Hmm, If UMass can take advantage of JMU’s banged up d-line and establish the run, it should open things up for Kyle Havens and his favorite target Anthony Nelson to start stretching the defense. Or I guess they could take advantage of JMU’s banged up secondary to open things up for the rushing attack.
How JMU Can Win
Obviously, JMU needs to overcome their many injuries, especially on defense. And it wouldn’t hurt to actually get out to an early lead. However, I really think it comes down to eliminating all the damn penalties. I’ve been harping on it all year, but the Dukes have really beaten themselves with stupid, untimely penalties. Without them their is a good chance they’d be heading into this game 6-1. Keep them to a minimum on Saturday and there is a good chance they’ll emerge 5-3.
JMUSB Beer of the Week
Let’s go with something for the hop heads out there, Terrapin Hopsecutioner. Terrapin is a cool brewery out of Athens, Georgia. Useless fact: the brewery’s name is a bit of a nod toward the Grateful Dead and the album Terrapin Station. I’m drinking one as a write this and it’s good. As you’d expect from the name, it’s got some strong hop flavor and a bit of a piney taste, but it’s well balanced by the malt and not overwhelmingly bitter. Plus the name Hopsectutioner is pretty bad ass. Good beer.
Our Prediction
JMU 17 – UMass 13
The offense isn’t going to light it up, but it takes a baby step forward. The defense gets the job done. Playoff hopes remain alive. Go Dukes!
I guess this we shouldn’t expect Coach Matthews to comment on the blog anytime soon. He closed practice to the media because he didn’t want anything leaked via social media. In his words, he’s against “Tweeter or twister or whatever you call it.” Um, speechless.
Matthews and the Dukes face UMass at home this week. Minutemen Coach Kevin Morris talks about the match up in UMass Football Weekly.
Prior to the ‘Nova game, the RTD talks about how expectations for the Dukes were ratcheted up after the Tech win and considers if a 7-4 CAA team could make the playoffs.
We’ve talked about how much we love Brian Mull’s coverage of CAA hoops. His objective and logical defense of Devon Moore and the JMU back-court is an example of why.
Rush The Court breaks down the CAA hoops race and predicts the Dukes will finish 5th.
The JMU women are heating up on the soccer field. They’ve won 5 straight and cruised over ODU with a 5-1 win.
The field hockey team has come back to earth after a bit of hot streak. The women lost to William & Mary last Saturday and now are .500 in the CAA. I’m sure Coach L will get ’em back on track soon.
Finally, if you’re headed back to the ‘Burg this weekend for the game, it’s OK to leave the purple at home just this once. It’s the Dukes Tackle Cancer – Pink Out Game. I’ve heard some folks grumbling about this because pink isn’t intimidating or some nonsense. Each to their own, but I think it’s a great idea and am proud that JMU is doing it.
JMU lost another close game, falling 14-7 to Villanova. This was the Dukes third CAA loss and it drops them to 4-3 on the year. I’m really not sure what to say about this one. It was ugly at times, but the Dukes hung in there and looked like they might steal it. In the simplest terms, it was a very close loss to a very good conference opponent. JMU actually had a chance to repeat the Landers to Williams “Miracle on the Mainline” and tie the game. A Dudzik Hail Mary was picked off in the endzone as time expired though. Tough, tough loss.
I will say this, we’re all wasting our time trying to figure out why the offense isn’t putting up more points. Here is the answer: It’s just not a explosive offense! We’ve seen enough at this point to recognize that this is intentionally a hyper-conservative, some might say unimaginative, system. The Dukes are going to run the ball and throw some short passes. If someone makes a play and breaks one (i.e. Sullivan at Tech) they’ll score quickly. If not, then they’ll play stellar defense and try to grind out a win. We might not agree with it, but it’s pretty clear that’s what the coaching staff is trying to do, isn’t it? Whether they’re doing it because of injuries to the o-line, lack of confidence in certain players, or because they’re just gutless, is still up for debate though.
Enough of that. Here’s quick breakdown of some of the highs and lows from the game.
Thumbs Up
The entire JMU team’s 3rd quarter performance – Heading into the half, JMU gave up 2 quick TDs to go down 14-0. It looked like the wheels were about to come off. The Dukes came out after the break and just dominated the 3rd quarter though. They opened with a 73 yard scoring drive and dominated the time of possession. I really thought it was the best quarter of football JMU has played since the Tech game.
Thumbs Down
Penalties – The Dukes have been plagued by game-changing stupid penalties all season. This game was no exception. The late hit on Whitney that negated a huge ‘Nova penalty, the personal foul hitting the returner after he called for fair catch, or the illegal man down field on the final drive that moved the Dukes from ‘Nova territory back inside their own 30, were all awful.

Are you friggin’ kidding me?! I get off the Metro to walk into the job this morning and this big stinkin’ turd is parked across the street from my office .
I mean seriously. This pretty much describes the way the Dukes’ season is going. Ugghhhh.
Many of you might be saying to yourself “Is that guy in the picture the dude who used to come to Rob & Todd’s fraternity house, pick up their boy Porter, and pop his head through the ceiling tiles repeatedly while everyone drank Beast Lite and laughed?” And I would say to you, “Yes, that is a picture of former JMU basketball player Fred Boyd getting married at a tailgate party last Saturday.”
But Fred’s wedding isn’t the only JMU basketball item to be excited about. CAA Media day took place yesterday and there are big expectations for both the men’s and woman’s programs. First of all, Kenny Brooks and the woman are picked to repeat as CAA Champs and Dawn Evans is the CAA preseason co-player of the year. We’re by no means experts on the women’s game, but Coach Brooks is building a program we can all be proud of. Plus, how can not root for a player like Dawn Evans, a young woman who was one of the country’s leading scorers last season despite battling kidney disease?
We’ve been saying for months that this year’s men’s team has a chance to make some noise. It appears that others agree with us. JMU was picked to finish fourth in the CAA this season. That might not sound like much unless you consider two things: 1.) JMU finished 11th last year and no CAA team has ever been picked to finish 7 spots higher than they did the previous year and 2.) The program sucked before Coach Brady arrived. Seriously. Dillard and Keener took JMU to new lows. Brady is ready to make them contenders again. In addition to the improved expectations for the team, folks also have high hopes for some JMU players. Denzel Bowles and Julius Wells were tapped as preseason All CAA honorees, first team and second team respectively. Sounds like we can finally be excited about hoops again.
What a disaster! The second half of yesterday’s game may end up going down as the heartstabbing moment that killed the Dukes season. Or hopefully it will go down as the day that forced the offensive coaching staff to take a good long look in the mirror and play to the kids’ strengths the rest of the way, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
The coaching and playcalling are so bad and are likely to be covered a lot of other places so I’ll start by quickly running down the other atrocities from yesterday.
Injuries: Ronnell Brown, the biggest, strongest, most respected player the Dukes have on D, was forced to join Monroe, Veney, Emmons, and Dixon Wright on the sidelines early in the second half yesterday with what looked like a serious injury. All of them were expected to contribute heavily this season and even a program as deep as JMU has a breaking point. As mad as I may be about how badly the Dukes were outcoached yesterday, this situation is killing the team and that kind of talent can overcome a lot of mental shortcomings from the headset crew. Vidal Nelson, the do-everything, hard-hitting senior safety, also was injured, but incredibly returned despite a possible separated shoulder and turned in, along with DJ Bryant, a herculean effort to try and keep the Dukes in it. Unfortunately, when the offense is not only not producing for the Dukes, but conversely is also handing points to the opposition, there’s only so much the D can do.
Officiating: Look, it’s extremely important to note, lest we sound like BlueHens, that this game was not lost by bad calls. It was lost by Durden and co. with the responsibility for building and executing an offense, but the officiating in the CAA this year has been an outright disaster. I have to confess my worst fear is that Mickey’s antics through the years have honestly turned them against the Dukes (and also that Mickey’s flipping out isn’t exactly the best signal to his own players about panic in a tough part of the season), but really it’s just incompetence at the FCS level. The extremely late late-hit call that kept the UNH drive alive to give them the icing-the-game 28-14 margin was terrible. It was an incredibly athletic play by the Dukes, but the refs saw guys flying out of bounds and crashing through the sidelines and just assumed, wrongly, that the hit was out of bounds. Happened right in front of us and it was a disaster.
Then a few plays later, a UNH lineman (#74) threw a punch at a Dukes player. A big ole’ haymaker that the entire stadium saw. Well, everyone except ANY of the jackasses in the striped shirts. Would have taken the Wildcats out of field goal range and likely have prevented the final touchdown. This one was just horrendous and my guess is the player will be suspended by the league.
OK, back to the Offense/Coaching: Look, the offense looked alright in the first half, producing huge runs by Scott Noble and Drew Dudzik to set up the TD’s, but they also failed to capitalize on a huge punt return despite the fact MM finally went for it. We could argue about Drew but I thought he was going downfield late out of desparation and lack of a better option when the interceptions occured. It was just glaringly obvious that UNH’s coaches adjusted to everything the Dukes were doing at halftime, while the JMU staff adjusted to jackshit. That actually applies to both offense and defense, but the offense is the real issue. Again, my biggest fear here is we have nothing left to turn to. We’ve bet the house on the switch to The Pistol (about three years too late to be innovative) and we literally only have the 10 or so base plays for that offense to run. I’m just not sure we have anywhere else to go.
Last word: Well, it may turn out that the last season pre-New Bridgeforth will be remembered mostly for the VT game, but we as fans also need to adjust our expectations. Just making the playoffs would be an ENORMOUS accomplishment for this team given their retarded offense and injuries all over the place. I just hope they turn it around NOW, as opposed to waiting for a huge slide like last year. Obviously, @ Villanova is a tough place to start, but even a loss isn’t a death knell if they start playing better. So if you aren’t making the bus trip next weekend, join us at Bailey’s around 3 to cheer on the Dukes and don’t give up before you attend the UMass game on the 30th and help turn this thing around!!
It’s Homecoming Weekend at JMU. In my younger days that would have meant rushing out of work on Friday afternoon, piling into a car with friends, and driving straight to the ‘Burg ready to spend my weekend drinking obscene amounts of Beast Lite, and striking out with an untold number of young co-eds. Now, Homecoming mostly serves as a reminder that I am old. Very old. There is a big football game however, and I’m way more excited about that than I ever would have been years ago.
Match-up: #7 JMU Dukes vs #16 New Hampshire Wildcats
Records: JMU (4-1, 1-1 CAA), New Hampshire (3-3, 1-2 CAA)
Kick-off: 3:30 PM
TV: TSN/CSN-NE
Weather Forecast: 68 and Sunny
Other Previews: One from the bad guy’s perspective and one from the good guy’s perspective (written by our commenter JMU Rugby!).
Let’s Get Down to Business
Just like many Wildcat squads from the past, this year’s team throws early and throws often. QB R.J. Toman sets the pace for the leading passing offense in the CAA, which averages 238 yards a game in the air. They’ve also got the conference’s receptions leader, in senior wide receiver Terrance Fox, who averages 6 catches a game. They struggle running the ball though and currently sit last in the CAA in rushing offense.
The Wildcats Play D Also
Taking a quick look at the stats, it appears that New Hampshire has a pretty stout defense. They only give up 15.8 points a game, good for 4th best in the conference. They also force a lot of turnovers, with 3 fumbles recovered and 15 picks. Dig a little deeper however and the Wildcat D doesn’t exactly seem like the 85 Bears. Throw out the blowout over not-quite-a-powerhouse Central Connecticut State in which UNH only gave up a field goal, and last week’s shutout over Richmond in which the Spiders’ punter played QB (and threw 5 picks!) and the points against climbs to 23 a game.
The Dukes’ Defensive Stars
It’s no secret that the strength of JMU’s team is its defense. At this point, I think it’s safe to say that Stephon Robertson is the real deal. The redshirt freshman linebacker leads JMU in tackles and has the 9th most in the CAA. Fellow linebacker Pat Williams ranks 14th in the same category. DJ Bryant has been an absolute monster on a D-line led by senior Ronnell Brown. And while this year’s secondary doesn’t have a Tony Lezotte type dominant force, the group collectively is just sick.
The JMU Stars on Offense
N/A
Seriously?
No. We kid because we love. Sure, there might not be a Rodney Landers sort of superman presence on this offense, but collectively there is a ton of talent. Coming into this season I thought this Dukes team potentially had more game-breakers than any JMU team of recent memory. Drew Dudzik, Justin Thorpe, Kerby Long, Scott Noble, Dae’Quan Scott, Jamal Sullivan, & Griff Yancey all have big play ability. Unfortunately Justin went down, just when it appeared Mickey had figured out a way to use him effectively and Barlow is now out. We all know that the offense hasn’t found its groove yet, but that doesn’t mean it won’t eventually.
There’s Always a But
I’ve spent a lot of time breaking down tape and conducting in-depth analysis of the JMU attack and I can’t figure it out. OK, that’s a slight exaggeration (actually it’s a complete lie), but I’ve watched the games while drinking beer and screaming “open up the damn playbook!” and I’m still stumped. So I’m forced to look at the stats. JMU is 3rd in the CAA in rushing offense, but dead last in passing. JMU has given up the fewest sacks in the CAA, but also has the fewest first downs. JMU is 3rd in the league in red zone efficiency, but they don’t get in the red zone often and only Rhode Island and Towson have fewer red zone TDs. JMU has scored 103 points this season for a respectable 21.2 points a game average, but 48 of those points came against Morehead State, a team that is just awful.
That Didn’t Help
Yeah, the stats paint a hazy picture at best. Is this just another JMU power rushing attack that doesn’t emphasize passing or is this just a plain old struggling offense? I still haven’t figured it out. It does seem like the coaches are calling the game not to lose, instead of to win though. That’s fine if for teams that play shut-down defense (check) and limit mistakes (no check, not even a half check). The Dukes are killing themselves, averaging almost 70 yards a game in penalties!
Ugh, This Offense Makes Me Want to Drink
Makes sense. Since its Homecoming and I’m once again reminded how old I am, we’re gonna go old school this week. The JMUSB Beer of the Week is Liberty Anchor Steam. Beer geeks know that this was the beer that started the craft beer movement in America, yet I feel like it’s often overlooked. Maybe it’s because it’s ubiquitous and people sleep on it the way hipsters pretend to hate bands that make it big. It’s a damn good beer though. Get some. Drink some. Repeat.
JMUSB Prediction
As we told you in our New Hampshire preview, we think this is the year the Wildcats take a step back. We also tell you every week that this could be the week the offense starts clicking. We’re nothing if we’re not stubborn. Dudzik gets ’em rolling on Saturday.
JMU Dukes 24 – New Hampshire Wildcats 13
JMU’s Men’s Soccer team scored an impressive draw with third-ranked and defending National Champ UVa last night. Needless to say, our obsessive coverage of Dixon Wright’s replacement at placekicker and whether Sharples, all 132 lbs. of him, will have to dress this weekend, have led us to overlook some great stuff going on around JMU Nation.
With many of us making the Homecoming pilgrimage this weekend, seems a great time for a quick run around the highlights and status of the other Fall Sports.
Men’s Soccer: 7-2-1; 2-1 CAA JMU is off to a stellar start, playing for the most part well over the mid-pack preseason expectations and feeding off the incredible play of one of the country’s best players in C.J. Sapong.
Women’s Soccer: 8-6, 4-2 CAA Dukes are in a 3-way tie for third, but they own both tiebreakers and are being led by the prolific duo of Teresa Rynier and Cate Tisinger.
Volleyball: 15-4 Overall, 4-1 CAA (9-0 at home!) The young squad made up of mostly sophs and juniors seems to be getting better every match and is getting a breakout season from Sophomore Danielle Erb.
Men’s Golf: Just kidding Landeta, we have no idea what’s going on with this team.
Field Hockey: 8-7, 4-2 CAA Playing quite possibly the nation’s toughest schedule, and certainly the Dukes most ambitious ever, the women are starting to come together winning 5 of their last 7. Amy Daniel and Dolores De Rooij have started to find the scoring touch lately to spark the offense. Doesn’t get any easier as they travel to Chapel Hill this weekend to take on the defending National Champion Tarheels, but the ladies are sure to be battle-tested and ready for a run at the Conference title when tourney time arrives soon!
So if you’re spending the weekend in the ‘Burg, don’t sleep on some of the other teams (and for those of us from our generation, their impressive new facilities in most cases) and spread some Purple Pride even beyond 1/2 Bridgeforth. Go Dukes!
That said, New Hampshire preview coming soon.
In case you’re wondering where you’ve seen the Dukes current offense before, you can thank Trey Parker and Matt Stone for laying the groundwork for this season’s version seen here at left. So instead of reviewing the most excrutiating win in years over Towson on Saturday, I’m just going to get a few things out.
There are just too many concerns for us to even begin a list here, but needless to say when the Dukes are running gimmick plays on 4th and Goal at the 1 it makes me want to kick the IT staff at the MadiZone in the nuts! Oh wait, actually I always want to do that (and the new Droid JMU Football app is a huge FAIL also). But I do shed a tear when I begin to worry about the living conditions in the undisclosed location where the terrorists are hiding Mickey Matthews. Because the JMU that I know and love, the one that never let’s me down, the one that ALWAYS goes for it on 4th, even in their own end against the wishes of sissy fans out there, with a mule-stubborn running play or option up the middle has completely disappeared.
Rant concluded, I would urge you to consider that the Dukes are 4-1 and coming home for Homecoming! Exactly where we hoped they’d be when the season started, just not exactly the way we thought they’d get there. All is not lost. Last year right now the Dukes were 2-3 and pretty much out of it before gaining steam the second half. This year they’ve survived the spotty early season and still have everything in front of them. This butt-trifling performance against Towson was exactly what they did against Hofstra last year, only this time they emerged relatively unscathed. Or so we hope!
Injury news: DJ Bryant tweeted he’s been cleared to play this week already after getting his bell rung Saturday while not wearing a mouthpiece, TE Barlow is out a few weeks, JMU is seeking a medical redshirt for Defensive Lineman Emmons who was injured in the 1st qtr of the VT game after transferring from Army. UR Ticks QB Aaron Corp, the highly touted transfer from USC, is out for the season. You fancy, huh?!
Lastly, it’s HOMECOMING! So be happy, get your butt down to the ‘Burg and into the spirit early, and Let’s Go Dukes! (Also, big win for Field Hockey who erupted on offense in the second half Sunday).
